Every once in a while, Indian cinema revisits a historical event and unearths a story so compelling it feels destined for the screen. Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, Inspector Zende is a slick, witty retelling of Mumbai cop Madhukar Zende’s real-life pursuit of the notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj. Judging by the initial response, this latest film, which is available on Netflix, is already striking a chord with audiences.

Inspector Zende Review (3/5): A Witty Duel of Charms

At the heart of the film is a mesmerizing duel between its two lead actors. Manoj Bajpayee, in the titular role, embodies Inspector Zende with a quiet authority and a subtle, wry humour. He was an excellent choice for the role, capturing the no-nonsense yet clever demeanor of a 1990s lawman. Opposing him is Jim Sarbh, who steps into the shoes of the antagonist, a thinly veiled stand-in for Sobhraj. Sarbh’s performance is a perfect counterpoint to Bajpayee’s gravitas, lending a sinister and captivating depth to the narrative.

The film successfully immerses the viewer in its setting, thanks to a well-chosen supporting cast, including Girija Oak, who is charming as Zende’s traditional Maharashtrian wife. The movie is rich with well-known Marathi actors, which adds an authentic layer to the film’s Mumbai and Goa backdrop. What truly sets Inspector Zende apart from typical biographical crime dramas is its bold tonal blend. Mandlekar forgoes a somber procedural for a mix of crime, dark wit, and quirky comedy, creating a unique and entertaining viewing experience.

While the film excels in its performances and unique tone, it’s not without its flaws. The second half of the movie experiences a dip in pace, a common issue in thrillers that slow down to develop their characters. The plot, at times, feels weak, and some scenes, particularly those shot in Goa, are less than polished. However, the payoff is ultimately worth it, leading to a satisfying finale that resolves the central conflict with a flourish.

Inspector Zende is more than just a biopic; it’s a battle of wits and a reminder that truth can be stranger, and far more entertaining, than fiction. It transports you to the 1990s with its outstanding acting and a lighthearted, nostalgic feel. While some murder scenes may not be suitable for younger viewers, it is a trending option on Netflix and a good choice for a light weekend watch. If you’re interested in the real story, Sobhraj’s life was also chronicled in the Netflix and BBC series, “The Serpent.”

I would rate this film 3 out of 5 stars. It promises to be a nostalgic, lighthearted ride with the help of outstanding acting and a strong supporting cast.
